What's in a Logo?

How we developed the Harmon Home Health Logo utilizing the Fibonacci CodeCarol & Mary

The Harmon Home Health logo is a tulip which was created by Italian designer Tullio Treffiletti, based in Milan, Italy. This unique tulip was created by applying the design principles of the “golden ratio” which itself can be derived from the Fibonacci sequence. The tulip also has a special meaning in the heart of agency founder Kimberly M. Harmon, related to a unique experience with a dying patient in the spring of 2005.

Our logo represents the circle of life, the never-ending energy flow that exists in nature. We carefully chose this blue/green combination. Green is the color of nature which symbolizes harmony and safety. It is known to possess a healing power. Blue is the color of the sky & sea which symbolizes tranquility and calmness. It is known as the color of trust. Our tulip logo brings together the harmonious qualities of these colors. We want our patients, clients, and families to embrace the abundance and energy within nature that we so greatly admire.

What is the Fibonacci sequence, and who was Fibonacci?

The Fibonacci Sequence: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55….
Every figure is the sum of the two preceeding: 1+2=3, 2+3=5, 3+5=8 etc…

Fibonacci’s name was Leonardo di Pisa during his own lifetime. He was born in Pisa, Italy in 1175 A.D. Pisa was an important commercial town in its day and had links with many Mediterranean ports. Leonardo’s father, Guglielmo Bonaccio, was a kind of customs officer in the North African town of Bugia, so Leonardo grew up with a North African education, under the Moors. Leonardo learned from merchants their systems of doing arithmetic. He realized the many advantages of the “Hindu-Arabic” system over all others and brought these ideas to Europe through his book Liber abacci (meaning Book of the Abacus or Book of Calculating). Scholars and mathematicians who are familiar with his work, namely his book Liber abacci, in later years called him Fibonacci, from (Filius Bonacci) the Latin meaning for “the son of Bonacci” which appeared in the title of his famous book. Fibonacci is responsible for bringing the decimal system to Europe.

It is likely that the Fibonacci sequence, which was introduced in his first book through what is known as the “Rabbit Problem”, was information that Fibonacci had likely learned through his travels and used it as an example of the Fibonacci sequence in nature. This assumption is based on information that Hindu scholars had been exploring the same subject before Fibonacci’s time.

One of the most spectacular examples of the beauty of the Fibonacci sequence in nature is the positioning of seeds in a Sunflower. Notice the Fibonacci spirals in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions. This spatial arrangement is observed in pine cones as well.

The number of natural occurrences of the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden section or ratio can be found in honeybee ancestry, rabbit reproduction patterns, the position of leaves on a stem, the branching of new stems from previous stems, the number of petals on common flowers, the spiral chambers of the nautilus shell, cauliflower shapes, the ratios of our finger length joints and even the growth of the stock market.
